European Youth Meeting of Taizé in Zagreb, 27.12.06 - 01.01.07
27.12.06 - Coming to Zagreb
My trip to Zagreb started at Dortmund central station. On the way to Cologne Matthias and Jean Louis joined me on the train
and finally at the airport about a dozen Taizé people (easy to recognize by their significant backpacks and
sleeping bags) have come together to board the plane to Zagreb. Arriving at Zagreb airport (Aerodrom) we found a
first Taizé information stand and got to know that there is a transfer bus from the airport to the center
that even offered a Taizé discount ticket price. A good start into this meeting. Getting off the bus at Avenija Dubrovnik
as recommended by the airport welcome we had to go for a longer walk ("pilgrimage of trust") with all our luggage
until we arrived at Zagreb fair (Zagrebacki Velesajam) where people told us that accomodations for the night would only
be available in the evening. But we could leave our luggage at Velesajam and got a map, meal and transport ticket
so I left with Guido, Mattes, Jean Louis and Judith for some hours of sightseeing in cold and foggy but beautiful old Zagreb.
In the old town at Kaptol we saw the cathedral and market place and tasted delicious roasted chestnuts. Further the
"space trams" with their heated "nuclear rocket seats" were an attraction, too.
Back at Velesajam we had out first Taizé dinner and after that evening prayer (at that time - one day
before the official start - with "only" some hundred or a few thousand people). Afterwards we left to search our accomodation
for the first night as the official welcome for participants was supposed to be the next day. Unfortunately, people
at the pre-welcome were a bit confused so we walked - packed with luggage and accompanied by volunteer Benjamin - from
one place to the other until we finally found "our" school gym for the night. This success had to be celebrated with
a glass of local beer before we went to sleep for some hours.
