We had planned to leave before 2 o'clock and before the huge Japanese group, but they obviously had had the same
idea, so the last 500 meters of altitude were a little crowded and we got the unique experience of queueing for
a mountain summit. However, it was not so bad that people were slowed down because the effects of low oxygen
concentration in the air became more severe with every meter of altitude. We could see numerous people sitting
at the side of the track, exhausted from ascending too fast. But with Mauricio's oxygen-in-cans (and surely
Keiko's oxygen-in-pills) as well as our baggage donkey Dominikus (only a Bavarian climbs a mountain with two
huge backpacks) everybody made it to the summit.
Then, we had to wait a while for sunrise. With temperatures slightly above 0°C and ice-cold, strong winds
this was not so comfortable, but the beautiful sunrise over the clouds was really worth it. Then, we drank
some hot chocolate to warm up and had a nice walk around the crater and to the highest point of the volcano.
